GWAR - House of Blues, Orlando - 8.6.99

Welll... I didn't think at the time that I was at the show that I would be writing a review of it. But since then I have slowly started to become entangled in the Daily Ruse by many a crafty trick, so here I am. Anyways, GWAR is not really a concert, but more of an experience. I, before this show, had been a GWAR-virgin sans the very occasional video or song. Some of my friends had been and liked it, so i was psyched to see 'em.

(A note about the music: who the fuck cares? Is GWAR about music? No no no no... But for those interested, as far as I could tell the music was, well, ok... i guess. It was like headbanger metal crap.)

i got up to about the second or third row, so i got a pretty decent view. people were flying all over the place during the show. its one of those shows where you will get kicked in the head a few times no matter what. the pit was a little scarier than usual. the crowd at the gwar show was weird, as to be expected. first, you got the big ugly metalheads with bad hair who take the music too seriously and look like they want to kill something. then, you got the gwar fanatics who are total nutjobs. how someone can take a band like this seriously, i will never know. these kids are probably from colombine or something. dumb fucks. and then, you have everyone else. a random smattering of various peple to see the spectacle that is gwar. you'll see all kinds of people in this category(i guess i fall into here). we don't know whats going on, but we are amused, awed, scared, confused, and most of all entertained. so you throw all these people together and you get kind of a weird pit, and not to mention this show was in florida so it was automatically a little screwy...

so anyways, the show was somewhat theatrical and actually had a plot involving some broken tablet that had to be reassembled. this required chopping up various people and monsters and also toilets and needles full heroin. so for those who don't know much about gwar, most of the concert is basically these guys dressed up in these ridiculous costumes parading around. there are also random others on stage clad in costumes or leather bondage attire, either being chopped up, maimed, and what not. throughout the entire show they squirt fake blood on you (and occasionally fake cum) from various orifices and appendages. the stuff onstage is amusing, like how they brought out this pussy looking monster and how they ripped a fetus out of monica lewinski. i didn't really follow the plot all the way, but it was fun nontheless.

at the end of the show they amassed a big group of females from the audience, presumably the hottest ones that they could find. and one by one a scantily clad guy in a leather thong picked 'em up, brought them to the center of the stage, and twirled them around on his shoulder, and then deposited them in this bin-like thing that lead off stage. They brought out a lot of chicks, and of course many of them ripped off their tops. and some showed their asses and shit like that. ahhhh... nudity.

by the end of the show i was soaked with blood. my shirt was pretty much totally pink and that shit was all over my face. the blood was annoying my contacts, which were dyed pink when i took them out.

all in all, it was a fun show. it was what i expected and then some. i don't know if i'd go see them again, but for all of you who haven't been before i would recommend seeing them if it sounds like your thing....
